Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMAI) Breakfast and Information Forum |

Mark your calendars for this event, which will take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. in the Carnival Student Center. The President of the South Florida Chapter, Silvia Camarota, and members of the HSMAI board will be in attendance to meet and greet students and to provide information about the association.
A student chapter is being formed at FIU so that students can have direct access to the movers and shakers in the world of hotel revenue management and marketing. HSMAI is the premier Hotel Revenue Management/Sales and Marketing membership group in the world. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more.

Internal Scholarships for Spring 2014 |
| All internal scholarships require students to be enrolled full time in the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management (minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students and a minimum of nine credits for graduate students). Internal scholarships are offered in the fall and spring semesters only and are awarded according to merit. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. Applications for internal scholarships are accepted during the first two weeks of the semester.

Certified Angus Beef Scholarships
Certified Angus Beef LLC and Sysco Specialty Meat Company are offering five $500 scholarships to students at the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. Scholarships will be awarded during the 2014 South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
In addition to the standard application form on the School’s scholarships website, the application package must include
a current resume and a half-page essay, which answers the question:
Why are quality menu ingredients, such as the Certified Angus Beef brand, important to the success of an establishment?
Barilla Best Student Chef Award for 2014 Scholarship
Barilla Premium Italian Food Products, a Gold Sponsor of the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, established the “Barilla Best Student Chef Award” and a $1,500 scholarship, which is awarded annually during the South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
In addition to the standard application form on the School’s scholarships website, the application package must include a current resume and an essay which answers the question: What does authentic Italian gastronomy mean to you?
Please note that the essay must not exceed one page and must be double spaced at 12-point font. If an essay does not meet these criteria, it will be disqualified from the contest.

STUDY ABROAD |
Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities |
 |
Spring 2014 is the perfect time to think about applying for a scholarship to study abroad. As you consider applying, be sure you are aware of scholarship deadlines and have ample time to prepare your applications.
Boren Scholarships
For undergraduate students seeking to study abroad for a semester or a year abroad to learn non-common languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, or Swahili. The on-campus deadline is January 22, 2014; the Office of Study Abroad essay deadline is January 8, 2014.
Fund for Education Abroad:
For undergraduate students who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks between May 2014 and May 2015. The deadline is January 17, 2014.
Gilman scholarships
For undergraduate students who are Pell Grant recipients and will be abroad for more than four weeks. The deadline is March 4, 2014 for scholarships for Summer 2014 and Fall 2014.
Rangel Fellowships
For graduating seniors who are applying to a master's program for Fall 2014 and who are interested in a career in foreign service. The deadline is January 17, 2014.
Pickering Fellowships
For rising seniors and graduate students who are interested in a career in foreign service. The undergraduate deadline is January 24, 2014; the graduate deadline is February 7, 2014.
U.S. Student Fulbright program
For graduating undergraduate students and graduate students who would like to teach English, do a research project, or study abroad for one year. Sessions are being held this spring for the September Fulbright deadline.

Get AHEAD by Studying Abroad! |
 |
Study abroad participants may earn "A Hospitality Education Abroad Designation" (AHEAD) by completing at least nine credits during one or more Chaplin School study abroad programs. Students who complete the AHEAD program will receive a printed certificate. Please note, this is not an official certificate program and, as such, will not be listed on transcripts.

Spend Spring Break 2014 in Belize – Sign Up Deadline 1/17 |

Take a three-credit course (HFT 3703 Adventure Tourism or HFT 5957 Study Abroad Research Program) during spring break, as you explore Belize! This trip examines the growing field of adventure tourism, including supply and demand, tourist typologies, tourism impacts on natural resources, risk management, and much more. Experience adventure tourism first hand through hiking, cave exploration, canoeing, kayaking, climbing temples, and snorkeling. Travel dates are from March 9 - 16, 2014.

Take a three-credit course (HFT 4955 Field Study Abroad or HFT 5957 Study Abroad Research Program) for two weeks in Genoa, Italy. Courses utilize Genoa as a lens through which students gain a perspective on broader issues affecting the present. This opportunity goes beyond a touristic experience as students are encouraged to live and engage in the city. Travel dates are from May 7 - 27, 2014.

Undergraduates may explore Wine and Culture (HFT 3868, three credits) during two weeks in La Rioja, Spain – one of the world’s oldest and most famous wine regions. Participating students will learn about the region, its influence on the wine industry, the region’s geography and topography, grape varietals, La Rioja’s culture, cuisine, markets and vineyards, and will experience, first hand, the Spanish wine industry. Travel dates are from June 2 - 18, 2014.

Study abroad in the exciting country of Brazil, which will host the World Cup and Olympic Games. Take a three-credit course (HFT 4955 Field Study Abroad or HFT 5957 Study Abroad Research Program) for two weeks in Brazil. The up and coming destination of Brazil boasts a variety of ecosystems, which include the Amazon, grasslands, caves and waterfalls, world famous cities like Rio, and much more. Travel dates are from July 14 - 31, 2014.

Undergraduates take their required hospitality management courses as they spend a full semester in China at the state-of-the-art center in Tianjin, China.
